EGStoltzfus Design Remodel Plan
VOLUME 2  •  ISSUE 2
February 2011

Greetings!

I am excited to present this month's newsletter, where we begin to explore surface trends in a new mini-series of articles. So much of a kitchen or bath remodel begins with the surfaces - countertops, flooring and tile - and the hub of many kitchen remodels is indeed the countertop. Once the countertop is chosen all other decisions about fixtures and finishes branch out from there - like spokes on a wheel.

Countertop options for your kitchen and bath (or bar or office ...) are fascinating and varied. If you are considering a remodel project that includes countertops, give us a call so we can help you select the right one to fit your lifestyle.

Finally, I'd be remiss if I didn't call your attention to the excellent offer at the bottom of this email!

All the best,

Surface Nucleus: Countertops

So much about home design is inspired by one piece - a painting, an existing piece of furniture or a vase. Same can be said about a kitchen and bath remodel - many customers begin with one piece and work their entire design around that core. That piece is very often the countertop. Cork & Slate

Since many popular countertop options begin with natural stone, the variations within the chosen piece are the sought-after inspiration that everything else centers on - it's the design hub, the nucleus. The floors, the cabinetry, the backsplash and even the appliances will all fit the unique depth found in the stone that will be made into the countertop.

Let's look at a few of today's countertop options ranked by popularity by National Kitchen and Bath Association.

1. Natural Stone Countertops

Perhaps one of the reasons why homeowners gravitate toward natural stone countertops is because no two pieces of stone are alike, which makes every kitchen one-of-a-kind. Homeowners can look at the different finishes, textures and definitions that only nature can provide. There are many forms of natural stone to choose from: granite (by far the most popular), marble, soapstone, slate and limestone, to name a few.

2. Quartz Composite

Often referred to as quartz surfacing or engineered stone, quartz composite is a hybrid of two popular high-end countertop materials - granite and solid surfacing - and has the look and feel of natural stone. Homeowners are often attracted to this material because of its designed depth and clarity. Quartz composite surfaces are made from 90 percent quartz and 10 percent acrylic or epoxy binder. Natural quartz is a very hard material, which makes quartz composite an extremely durable, non-porous surface that is resistant to stains, scratches and heat. Brand names include DuPont's Zodiaq and CaesarStone.

3. Solid Surface Countertops

Like natural stone, this product is extremely durable, easy to maintain and has a clean, smooth feel to it, but it is man-made. Homeowners who like the durability of stone but don't like the natural variations that come with it lean towards these solid surface countertops because the color and texture is consistent throughout. A recognizable brand name is Corian.

4. Laminate Countertops

Over time, the greatest value in countertops in terms of durability, maintenance, relatively low cost, and ease of cleaning still continues to be laminate. There are design limitations with laminate, and it doesn't have the depth of color or the solid feeling that the other products have; however, homeowners can ignite their creativity with this option. Laminate comes in a variety of solid colors, in addition to wood grains and patterns.

These are just a few of the most popular countertop categories we see with our homeowners. Other types include ceramic tile, butcher block, stainless steel and concrete, to name a few more.

Because all four countertop choices listed above come with pros and cons at varying costs, it is a process of balancing your value decision on budget and taste. We will be happy to share our experiences and aid your research so you can make the choice that best fits your family's lifestyle.

Concept to Completion:   Design goals to Certificate of Occupancy

In each issue of this newsletter, we will briefly review one of the stages every one-of-a-kind project must flow through in order to reach successful completion.

Previously discussed steps can be found here:

Step 1:  Begin with a concept.

Step 2: Seeing the end at the beginning.

Step 3: Finalizing the design by making selections.

Step 4: Reaching Agreement.

If you remember back to our previous step - finalizing the design by making selections - the goal of this step is to provide you, the client, with the clearest picture of what the project will look like when completed - and how much it will cost.

Now we are at the agreement phase of your project, but before we sign the agreement, let me backtrack a bit.

We've all heard remodeling "horror stories" - where the homeowner is unhappy with their remodeling experience. It is important to understand that disappointment only comes when expectations are not met, and this is the catalyst behind the EGS pre-construction process (Steps 1, 2 and 3).

When people are disappointed in their remodeling or home improvement project, it is often because there wasn't a clear picture up-front of how the project would turn out. Or worse yet, the homeowner wasn't given the time to consider all the items that could be included into their ideal project.

During the EGS pre-construction process, our intention is to move you through the remodeling decision-making process at a pace you are comfortable with - and every client is different. Some have dreamed about their remodeling project for years and have exactly what they want in mind and the selections made before they walk through our doors. Others need a lot of time to discover exactly what it is they want. And others are somewhere in the middle.

That's okay. The process is intended to give you ample time to discover answers to your questions and make informed decisions about your remodeling project. This will allow you to precisely visualize the finished product. So by the time we reach agreement, you have a full understanding, in contract form, of the design so that EGStoltzfus can remodel your home with your full confidence.

Home Asset Protection 101  Seal your leaks

Even though the worst of winter is behind us, it's never too late to examine the weather-stripping at the bottom of your exterior doors and replace them if they are showing signs of wear.

The weather-stripping you choose should withstand against friction, weather and temperature changes. Additionally, it should provide a tight seal with the door jamb yet allow it to open freely. You will also want to adjust the threshold to get the door seal nice and tight, preventing air from seeping from your home. Making these small adjustments, over time, can really add up to large dollars and cents.
